About ANSI #50 Hollow Pin Roller Chains
CTS® #50 Hollow Pin Roller Chain
CTS® ANSI #50HP hollow pin roller chain is a 5/8" (15.875 mm) pitch roller chain in which the standard solid pins are replaced by hollow, through-bored pins. The 5.13 mm pin bore accepts cross rods, cotter pins, slats, trays, and custom attachments, so the chain can both drive a system and carry products at the same time. As with every chain CTS builds, the #50HP is produced to ANSI/ASME B29.1 dimensional and strength requirements for full interchangeability with standard #50 sprockets.

ANSI #50 Hollow Pin Roller Chain Technical Data
An ANSI #50 hollow pin chain uses the same 15.875 mm pitch, 10.16 mm roller diameter, and 9.40 mm inner width as a standard ANSI #50 roller chain, but each pin is drilled through with a 5.13 mm bore. Cross rods or attachments are passed through the pins and fixed with cotter pins or circlips, converting a drive chain into a conveying chain.

Typical uses include product transfer where a solid surface is not practical: oven bands, cooling tunnels, bottle and can handling, box transfer at right angles, and gravity or scraped conveyors. Because the pin is hollow, tensile strength is lower than that of a solid-pin chain of the same size (20.0 kN / 4545 lbf for #50HP), so hollow pin chains are specified for conveying duty rather than high-torque drive duty.

Not the right choice when the chain carries a full torque load, runs at high speed, or must transmit shock loads — in those cases, specify solid-pin ANSI #50 (or super/heavy series #50H) and use a separate conveying element.
