Description
About CA555 Agricultural Chain
The CA555 is a CA-type steel agricultural roller chain with a 41.4 mm pitch and a 16.87 mm roller diameter, built for the dirty, dusty, high-shock duty cycles of harvesting equipment. It belongs to the same CA550-series family as the CA550, CA557, CA620 and CA960, but it is the narrow-bodied version: the width between the inner plates is only 12.7 mm, compared with 19.81 mm on a CA550.
That narrower inner width is what makes the CA555 fit narrower guide rails and gathering-chain channels; it is lighter than the wider CA-type chains (1.72 kg/m against 1.94 kg/m for a CA550), and it puts less load on idler sprockets at the front of a corn head. In practice, a CA555 agricultural chain is the chain you specify when the machine was built around a slim, sealed chain path rather than an open, wide one.
Whether you're seeking new designs for specialized or experimental applications, or simply trying to locate a specific chain, CTS® is here to support you every step of the way.

CA555 vs CA550, CA557, CA620 and CA960
The table below compares the five most common models. Pitch and roller diameter are close across the family, but inner width, pin size, plate thickness, and tensile strength determine what the chain will do.
Where a CA555 Chain Is Used: Cornhead Gathering Chains
The most common application for the CA555 agricultural chain is the gathering chain on a corn head. Corn heads run pairs of chains down narrow, trash-filled channels, picking up stalks and pulling them into the snapping rolls. That duty cycle combines abrasive dust, high shock loads, and very limited space — which is exactly the profile the narrow CA555 was designed for.
Beyond corn heads, the CA555 is also used on:
- Combine harvesters and harvesting equipment generally, where a compact chain path is required.
- Hay and forage equipment, including balers where a narrow chain runs alongside other components.
- Other farm machinery where a CA-type chain is specified by a narrow, enclosed guide channel.
FAQ
Is a CA555 chain the same as a CA550 chain?
No. Both run on a 41.4 mm pitch with a 16.87 mm roller, but the CA555 is the narrow version: 12.7 mm between the inner plates, compared with 19.81 mm on a CA550. They are not interchangeable on the same guide channel or sprocket set.
What is a CA555 agricultural chain used for?
Its main use is the gathering chain on corn heads, where the chain runs in a narrow, dusty channel under high shock loads. It is also used on combines and hay equipment where a compact chain path is required.
Do you supply the matching sprockets as well?
Yes. We supply the gathering-chain sprockets and idler sprocket units used with CA555 loops, matched to the chain so the pitch and tooth form are correct. Replacing worn sprockets together with the chain is the best way to avoid early failure.
