Description
About ANSI #40-3 Stainless Steel Roller Chains
CTS® #40SS-3 Stainless Steel Roller Chain
The ANSI #40SS-3 is a 1/2-inch pitch triplex (three-strand) roller chain in austenitic stainless steel. Three strands run on shared pins at a 14.38 mm transverse pitch, giving a 28.8 kN minimum tensile strength — three times the capacity of single-strand #40SS (9.6 kN) and 1.5 times #40SS-2 (19.2 kN).

FAQ
Can I fit a #40SS-3 where a #40SS single chain was running?
Only if the sprocket is changed to a three-strand #40-3 and the shaft and bearings can take the extra weight. The pitch and roller diameter are identical, so the sprocket diameter and shaft centres stay the same, but the pin length goes from 16.60 mm to 45.4 mm.
Should a triplex stainless chain be lubricated?
Yes. Stainless steel resists corrosion but can gall when run dry, so a food-grade lubricant applied on a normal schedule is still required.
