About ANSI #40-2 Stainless Steel Roller Chains 

CTS® #40SS-2 Stainless Steel Roller Chain

The ANSI #40SS-2 is a 1/2-inch pitch duplex (two-strand) roller chain built from austenitic stainless steel. Two strands sit on shared pins with a 14.38 mm transverse pitch, so the chain carries roughly twice the load of a single-strand #40SS in the same envelope — 19.2 kN minimum tensile strength against 9.6 kN for the simplex version. Choose #40SS-2 when a single strand is not enough: higher transmitted torque, longer centre distances with less sag, or replacing two parallel single chains with one duplex drive.

304 covers most washdown, moisture, and cleaning-agent exposure. Choose 316 for salt spray, chloride-rich processes, marine-adjacent equipment, or aggressive chemical contact.
Should a stainless chain be lubricated?
Yes. Stainless steel resists corrosion but can gall when run dry, so apply a food-grade or NSF-registered lubricant on the same schedule you would use for a carbon steel chain.
