Description

About DS40 Double Single Sprockets

An ANSI 40 double single sprocket — also written DS40, 40DS, or "40 double sprocket for two single chains" — is a sprocket that carries two independent rows of teeth on a single hub. Both rows are cut to ANSI 40 dimensions: 1/2-inch pitch, 0.312-inch roller diameter, and 0.284-inch tooth width (B1). The difference from a standard duplex sprocket is how the chains sit on it. A duplex sprocket drives one duplex chain whose two rows are joined by common pins. A DS40 sprocket drives two separate single-strand #40 roller chains, each running in its own groove.

Double Single (DS) vs. Duplex Sprocket: Which Do You Need?

Choose a double single sprocket when:
- You need to drive two separate single-strand #40 chains from one shaft.
- The two chains carry different loads or need to be tensioned independently.
- You are replacing two single sprockets with one component to save shaft length and alignment work.
- The two chains may be serviced or replaced separately.

Choose a duplex #40 sprocket when the two strands are permanently joined as one duplex chain and must stay in exact phase with each other. Duplex sprockets are also the usual choice for higher torque in a narrow space, because the load is shared through a single chain assembly.

If your machine uses two separate #40 chains on one shaft, the DS40 is the correct part. If it uses one duplex chain, you need a 40B duplex sprocket instead.

How to Specify a DS40 Sprocket (Ordering Guide)

Send us the following, and we will quote the correct part without back-and-forth:
1. Tooth count, or the outside diameter plus the chain size.
2. Bore: finished bore diameter, or "plain bore" if you will machine it yourself.
3. Keyway size and number of set screws, if required.
4. Hub type and any hub diameter or length restriction.
5. Material and surface finish, including stainless if the environment requires it.
6. Quantity and required delivery date.
Drawings, sketches, or photos of the worn part are the fastest route — our engineers will confirm every dimension before production.
