Instead of riveted pins, cottered chains use cotter pins to lock the outer plates. This allows the chain to be assembled and disassembled quickly with hand tools — no rivet cutting, no special tools required. That makes 60-cottered chains the first choice for applications where the chain must be installed, repaired, or extended on-site and where downtime matters.
